House of 24 - São José dos Carpinteiros Church
The patrimony of the Irmandade is constituted by the Church, in Rua de São José, the sacristy of normal use and the old houses of the Irmandade, with access through Rua da Fé.
The 17th century church, which preserves the moth and the arches of the main chapel and the side chapels, was partly rebuilt after the earthquake. It still preserves good 18th century tiles and a remarkable decorative painting with reserves in the vaults of the ceilings from 18th/19th century.
The referred Houses of the Irmandade, of good architecture and finishing in stonework and tiles, with highlight to the portico of the entrance where, we find the very rare heraldic representation of the Irmandade and of the offices of its Flag.
The work that we can visit today, is the result of the intervention in one of the most significant and emblematic buildings of the city of Lisbon, aiming the improvement and recovery of the House of the 24 and the Church of São José dos Carpinteiros which, besides presenting an enormous richness from the artistic, architectural and decorative point of view, also represents a heritage of symbolic and historical value for the city of Lisbon.
Being a work on existing heritage, much of the intervention was mainly focused on works of improvement, rehabilitation and conservation and restoration of heritage elements.
In terms of civil construction works and volumetry of the built set, the intervention proposal was based on the principle of restoring the original volumetry of the Casa dos 24. The proposal was to demolish the bastard floor, being necessary the execution of a new roof structure (metallic) and reinforcement of the structural integrity of the building with the execution of a concrete perimeter lintel.
This type of approach is represented not by the addition of works, but instead to be distinguished by the subtraction of a floor and spurious and ruined constructions. In order to better define the exhibition routes, the outer spaces were also worked on creating a perfect harmony and complementarity between interior and exterior, in the sense of creating spaces that can breathe in the city center.
