Villa dos Coches

Villa dos Coches

\\ Villa dos Coches is conceived through the relationship between two buildings and two architectural languages, mediating between the continuity of the historic city and the proximity of the Coach Museum, on Rua da Junqueira in Lisbon.

The intervention is structured around two gestures. The first is one of preservation, restoring the existing building while maintaining its volumetry, materiality, and chromatic identity. Its tiled façade ensures the continuity of the urban fabric and the permanence of built memory.

The second gesture introduces a new volume with a contemporary, refined, and rigorous expression. Rather than imposing itself, it positions itself as a mediator between the domestic scale of the street and the openness of the square. Its façade, composed of a regular rhythm of tubular profiles, filters light, creates depth, and produces a shifting reading throughout the day, transforming the building into an element of transition between transparency and opacity.

On the western elevation, a tile panel depicting a carriage in motion establishes a direct connection to the Coach Museum, inscribing the project within the identity of the place. Between the two volumes, the inner courtyard organises access, structures circulation, and reinforces the relationship between the buildings.

Villa dos Coches is not an exercise in contrast, but in precision — an architecture that seeks neither to replicate the past nor compete with the present, but to position itself between the two.
